Discover skin care trends in 2024
Every year new products and skincare tips appear, often portrayed as truly magical formulas that promise to revolutionize consumers’ routines. Some will fade as quickly as they appear, while others have the potential to leave a mark on the beauty care landscape and positively influence its future.
The best is always decided by ourselves, taking note of all relevant news. To keep you up to date, we’ve put together a list of the main trends that will make people talk throughout 2024, from new concepts of “neurocosmetics” to growing concerns about the sustainability and inclusivity of the products we apply to the skin.
A new holistic approach
The relationship between skincare and the promotion of well-being will continue to be a recurring theme this year, already covered by us in this blog article, although it is expected that it will take on new contours. With the development of areas of research relating to neurochemistry, the mind-body connection is now deepened from a mind-skin perspective, paving the way for the field of “neurocosmetics”.
The concept, further developed by scientist Kelly Dobos, refers to the study that seeks to unveil how stimuli received on the surface of the skin trigger sensations that, aside from being pleasant, can be used to our advantage and with prolonged effects. This is the case of facial massages performed with specific products that stimulate the sensation of heat or cold, as is the case of fragrances capable of enhancing different moods.
In parallel to the in-depth study of sensory receptors, there is also a new holistic view of dermatology, according to which the treatment of skin conditions must take human psychology into account. In particular, the consequences relating to individual self-esteem must be considered. The fusion between psychology and dermatology will therefore seek to strengthen the relationship between psychological well-being and the perception of one’s own skin, in a more personalized and comprehensive approach.
Allowing skin to recover from damage
It is likely that, in the near future, the option of protecting the skin in a more natural way will gain strength as a trend, as opposed to complex skincare routines that include an extensive list of products and the ingredients they contain. Synthetic components, such as retinoids and exfoliating acids, can weaken the skin’s natural barriers, leaving it more sensitive and smoother than ever before. To break this vicious cycle, which seeks to combat aggressions against the epidermis through ingredients that successively damage it, it will be useful to simplify your care routine.
We predict that moisturizers will once again have a prominent place in the world of cosmetics. Moisturizers are fundamental products that precede the application of others, but are also essential for promoting skin health and helping it to regenerate. Although it will not completely replace ingredients designed to meet very specific needs, this trend will give the skin the opportunity to rest for longer.
In other words, in 2024 the application of potentially aggressive products will tend to be better spaced out with periods of time in which simple moisturizers will shine on their own, allowing the regeneration and reinforcement of the skin’s natural barriers.
Back to skincare’s essentials
It is also expected that the preference and enthusiasm for minimalist skincare recipes will grow in line with the skincare trend that promotes a “Clean Beauty”. Alternatives to synthetic ingredients will attract consumers’ attention, with the largest offer of products free of parabens, sulfates and artificial fragrances.
As such, we may see the rediscovery of natural ingredients, inspired by botanical knowledge, which will give new vigor to the trend towards cosmetics free of chemical additives, some of which are potentially harmful to skin health.
At the same time, we await the development of new protective care against ultraviolet rays, with products resulting from increasingly sophisticated technologies, suitable for pleasant daily use. These developments will be fueled by the need to protect ourselves from extreme weather conditions.
Trends beyond time
Finally, we cannot ignore that concerns about sustainability will be a recurring theme and no less important in the cosmetics industry. The social justice platform TRVST estimates that the packaging of these products wastes a total of 120 billion units each year, constituting a phenomenon that is impossible to ignore.
Consumers are paying attention and are increasingly demanding regarding environmental awareness. Therefore, in 2024, skincare brands operate under great scrutiny, making a commitment to reduce their ecological footprint at all stages, from the material extraction processes to the life cycle of the products sold.
Another trend that will be noticed is the inclusion of people of different skin colors in clinical studies that attest to the effectiveness and safety of skincare products. The representation of different skin types should have increasing importance, so that everyone has their cosmetic needs met and can benefit from the skincare they deserve.
